改編自德博拉·利維所著布克獎(jiǎng)提名小說，講述一對(duì)陷入困境的夫婦和他們的青少年女兒去度假，生活被漂浮在別墅泳池里的裸體陌生人改變了。小說設(shè)定在1994年夏天，頗有名望的詩人喬·雅各布斯和他的妻子伊莎貝爾、女兒妮娜以及他們的朋友米切爾和勞拉夫婦在法國南部的避暑別墅度假，當(dāng)喬的粉絲凱蒂出現(xiàn)后，寧靜生活被打破，她對(duì)喬的迷戀和性吸引力是顯而易見的，但伊莎貝爾還是邀請(qǐng)她留下來。伊莎貝爾是一名駐外記者，她的工作一再使她遠(yuǎn)離家人，她已經(jīng)逐漸容忍喬持續(xù)的不忠。與此同時(shí)，凱蒂的心理問題越來越明顯，而唯一敢于解決問題的卻是妮娜。接近尾聲時(shí)，凱蒂似乎準(zhǔn)備自殺，但最終卻是喬自殺了。事實(shí)證明，凱蒂的精神問題只是喬更加根深蒂固的抑郁癥的反映。
